My name is Caroline Wang, and I am currently an undergraduate student at the University of California, San Diego majoring in sociocultural anthropology and minoring in history and global health. I will be graduating in 2026 with a Bachelor of Arts and will continue my education through UC San Diego’s Master’s program in Global Health. I aspire to work in nonprofit and NGO spaces with a particular commitment to serving immigrant, refugee, migrant, and asylee communities. Ultimately, I hope to contribute to the development of culturally competent health interventions and to advance health equity through my work.
I chose to intern with Pathways because I felt compelled to take action during a time when immigrants are being systematically targeted and demonized. Coming from an immigrant family myself, I wanted to stand on the front lines and apply the educational foundation that has shaped my commitment to social justice and equity. Immigration has long been a central passion of mine as a student of the humanities and social sciences. Studying the history and evolution of the immigration system and its enduring impacts on communities has deeply informed my academic journey. Additionally, as a student at an institution located so close to the U.S.–Mexico border, I feel a profound sense of responsibility and empowerment in understanding the history of the land I inhabit and the generations of people who have resisted and fought against injustice before me.
This internship has provided me with hands-on experience at the intersection of health, culture, and politics, all within a client-oriented and care-centered environment, which is what makes Pathways so unique. In this role, I have developed invaluable communication, interpersonal, and administrative skills. More importantly, I have witnessed firsthand the resilience and strength of Pathways’ clients. The hope they have inspired in me is immeasurable. The lessons I have learned at Pathways have supported my growth not only as a student and advocate but also as a human being.
To future interns:
It is truly a privilege to work at Pathways alongside such strong and inspiring women. This organization prioritizes care for yourself and others, which is essential when working in a space that confronts some of the most challenging aspects of humanity. At the same time, you will laugh often (because everyone here has an incredible sense of humor) and you will witness the very best of humanity in both the staff and our clients. Observing the staff’s dedication while they maintain compassion and positivity has deeply inspired me and transformed my worldview. The work can be demanding and time-consuming, but it is profoundly rewarding, and you will never regret the time you spend here.
