Mary has been with NCICC since the very beginning. She was one of our first volunteers to help start NCICC about 5 years ago, after volunteering for Casa de Amistad for 10 years. Long before NCICC began offering legal services, Mary began by teaching ESL classes to small groups of students. Mary loves volunteering for NCICC and is happy to see how far the organization has come, expanding to offer tutoring for the citizenship test and other important legal and social services.

“My heart is in this,” says Mary. “I feel that we all should have the chance to become what we choose to become.” Mary says that she is energized by seeing how hard the students work to reach their goal of citizenship. She knows it is difficult for them to reach this goal, and feels that helping out as a tutor at NCICC gives her purpose. For Mary, the most rewarding part of volunteering with NCICC has always been to see each student pass their citizenship test: “It is so great to see a student pass the test and then help other family members to pass the test as well.”

We are so thankful to have had Mary volunteer with us for all these years and are excited to see how she continues to make an impact on the lives of NCICC students in the years to come.
